Cartoon + texture image decomposition by the TV-L1 model
by Vincent Le Guen

Abstract
The cartoon + texture problem aims at decomposing an image into a
geometric part and a textural part. Yves Meyer was the first to
propose variational models that force the geometric part into the
space of functions with bounded variation, and the textural part
into a space of oscillatory distributions. Meyer's models are simple
minimization problems extending the famous total variation model.
However, their numerical solution has proved challenging.
There exists a wide literature of variants and numerical attempts to
solve these optimization problems. In this paper, we present an
implementation of a primal dual algorithm proposed by Antonin
Chambolle and Thomas Pock applied to this image decomposition
problem, formalized by the TV-L1 model initiated by Tony Chan and
Selim Esedoglu. A thorough experimental comparison is performed with
a recent filter pair proposed in IPOL for the cartoon+texture
decomposition.
