     The Anatomy of the SIFT method

    Abstract

This article presents a detailed analysis and implementation of the 
Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT), a popular image matching 
algorithm. SIFT is a complex chain of transformations; each element of 
this chain and the respective invariance properties are herein presented 
and analyzed. One of the main drawbacks of the SIFT algorithm is 
probably the large number of parameters that need to be set. This work 
contributes to a detailed dissection of this algorithm where a careful 
analysis of each of its design parameters is discussed and its impact 
shown in an online demonstration.
